Ice sculpture: How is an ice sculpture made?

The most frequent question our staff is asked is this, and the answer is simple. Whatever the size of the ice sculpture, the methods we employ are the same. The first step in creating an ice masterpiece is to design a design for the client to sign off on and for the sculptor to work from.

We’ll get the right-sized ice blocks from our on-site freezer once we’re ready to sculpt. Our team will begin by using a chainsaw to quickly chop off big pieces of ice to create a basic form for the sculpture. Our sculptors will carefully chisel in the intricate details without damaging the piece after carving out a rough outline with a chainsaw.

Depending on the client’s demands, we may use dyes or LED lights to finish the ice sculpture.

How long do ice sculptures last?

The length of time your ice sculpture will endure is determined by the size and location of the piece. If you leave an ice sculpture outside in the summer, it won’t last long; on the other hand, sculptures displayed in more temperature-controlled areas will survive a lot longer.

An ice sculpture should last more than 12 hours at room temperature, but the finer features will be less discernible in the first four hours. However, placing it in the coldest part of the event and setting it up at the very last minute can extend its longevity.

How do ice sculptures not melt?

Ice sculptures will eventually melt, but how fast they do so may be slowed. You can help your sculpture last longer by storing it in colder environments and avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources. We believe there is something quite lovely about seeing how the ice shifts and transforms over time, growing into an intriguing abstract artwork.
